    AVON LADIES VETS TEAM

Once again the Avon Ladies Vets team have had another successful season.  After preliminary rounds the team came top of their Box and went through to the National Finals weekend in Nottingham.

Ladies VetsTheir semi final match was against an extremely strong team from Kent.  However, the experience of Jet O’Neil, Rosie Bellinger and with the return of Karen Whitlow to the  team after a long injury, the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 proved too strong for the Kent side.  With a 3-2 win the team went through to the Final.

Sunday’s final was a thrilling match with the score level at 2-2 after wins by Rosie Bellinger and Helen Gould, it was left to Rose Bamber to pull Avon through.  With an impressive start displaying great squash and superb fitness Rose looked too strong for the Yorkshire No 2, and found herself 2-0 up.  Surely, the cup was coming home to Bristol.  But was it - how many of us have been there 2-0 up and cruising, but suddenly the points  go against you, that’s what happened to Rose, a couple of lucky shots from her opponent, a couple of shots that just hit the tin and the match had turned around.  With some great attacking squash and a cool head the Yorkshire No 2  was back in the match.   Unfortunately the fifth game just slipped away from Rose and once again Yorkshire took the title.

It was an excellent final and at the presentation it was commented, that not only had the ladies kept the men waiting with their long match, but that the ladies final had been the best match of the weekend!!

The team was left to right

Helen Gould from Next Generation in Bristol
    Karen Whitlow from Redwood Lodge
Jet O’Neil who lives in Shrewsbury but since her university days in Bristol has always played in the Avon County Team
Rosie Bellinger from Weston Premier Club

The team are also grateful to Pauline Butcher from Kingsdown, Jan Ellis from David Lloyd and Annie Griffin from Aztec who played in the early rounds.
